Me and Susie drivin' up the road to Ishpeming, my 69 station wagon, funky rusty thing It's dark and cold and late at night and something's goin' thump, I think the transmission died when I hit that bump The window's stuck half open, first gear is all I got, the air is freezing cold, the engine's running hot Good thing Susie was an easygoing gal, gettin' her back home was good for my morale Road Trip - you never know where you'll end up Road Trip - drive on down or back it up Road Trip - through the rain or in the snow Road Trip - how far you really wanna go Geraldine's gotta see her parents down state, she says her daddy summoned her, it isn't gonna wait She's askin' me to share the work by drivin' through the night, (gotta) make down it to U of M before the morning light I'm drivin' her old Mustang while she's sleeping in the back, we roll up by six am don't have a heart attack And then she drops me off, says "you're on your own," so I found another girl who's gonna take me home Road Trip - Your path may take a turn Road Trip - there's a lesson to be learned Road Trip - so many miles from home Road Trip - wanderin's in my bones And then there was the time I drove Chicago to LA White lines, truck stops and music all the way I didn't have Google just a map and almanac Leavin' home at last and I was never lookin' back Tire chains in the mountains, desert thunderstorm, driving for the captain in my Navy uniform Honeymoon, vacations, drive myself to work, stay alive on 405, no driving like a jerk Nowadays I'm slowin' down I don't get out too much, all the cars are automatic, they don't have a clutch I put in a lotta miles to get me up to here, someday I'll take another trip and maybe disappear Road Trip - I still got places left to go Road Trip - I still got things I need to know Road Trip - I won't be stayin' here for long Road Trip - get on in and come along
