Late August Blues

Crumbling asphalt, shattered glass This runway's come to pass, in the broken pieces I still feel the warmth but it won't last Take a taste of sweetness, feel the kiss of sunshine on your skin Then your stomach lurches, moonlight cascades out from deep within I know the words they spoke and I know times are changing That's why I'll always ask of you To keep the odds as far out of my view As I can take Good lord, I hope I'm not mistaken For a fool on borrowed time, too afraid to lose a dime I guess today's the day I reckon With the ugly bits of me I've left behind for now Denial always seems to follow doubt, or in my case It seems I'm always in a race with the slowest horse And I can only see flaws in this course, but really I've been speeding past This summer's come and gone too fast for me to find The pieces I've forgotten left behind I've lost the good and lost the bad And though it takes a toll on me to make mistakes But the moon begets the sun before it wakes
