Distant Flame

There's a fire I can barely see Flickering past what used to be It calls me like a dying song But every step just feels so wrong I reach but never touch the light It fades before it meets my sight Still I move, still I pretend That maybe I'll reach it in the end The sky is numb, the air is cold I drag a heart that feels too old But in the dark that flame remains A whisper burning in my veins I've lost the path, I've lost the name But I still chase that distant flame Not for warmth or saving grace Just to know it left a trace I speak to stars that never hear Tell them what I won't show near I hope the flame will answer back Before I slip into the black Some dreams don't die, they just decay But still they shine in their own way So I keep walking though I ache For something real I'll never take That distant flame, it draws me still Beyond the loss, beyond the will If I collapse before I find At least I burned inside my mind I've lost a pain and they might hate
