My Fear For Her

My wide-eyed blonde-haired blue-eyed angel was born that night When things get dark she's got a way of bringing out the light She takes to stories and she takes to song She'll graduate at the top of her class before long Yeah chances are that she'll go far while I'm at the bar God knows I'm desperate for sanctuary I've got a wife that talks like Christ and prays like the Virgin Mary I've got five kids, I don't know why Last night I blacked out sprawled out on the drive And when I came to that poor wife of mine had two black eyes I guess I knew better than to run away I think I love them but when they talk it's as if I don't hear what they say I suppose my fear for her is to feel the same Or for her to feel that she's to blame My wide-eyed blonde-haired blue-eyed angel has found a man She could do a lot better but I guess any man could do more than I can I walked her down the aisle and she said "I do" And I'm thinking to myself "If you do what I did to her I'll strangle you" I looked at all my children and their spouses They've all grown up, they've all bought houses And despite it all, she takes my hand, she says "I love you dad" And right then and there I learned what my wife meant when she said she was sad I guess I knew better than to run away I know I love them and I'm sorry's such a pointless thing to say I suppose my fear for her is to be ashamed Or for her to feel that she's to blame And now as things turn white I lie here and wonder if God knows I realized too late what was right Oh well, at least I made them smile from time to time Thinking hurts a little now Guess I'd better settle down My wide-eyed blonde-haired blue-eyed grandson was born that night And something tells me that when things get dark for her he has the light She gave the boy my name, I'm so proud But by God, he sings so loud I hope he never quiets down I hope he never quiets down
