Across the years All the tears Always me and you The stormy seas we weathered And all the English weather I remember seeing you 1940s, our smalltown's library I saw you across the room I wrote a letter to you Delivered by my mother She was a First World War medic Now there's another And it's calling me across the seas They gave me a rifle But I couldn't take a life I could see behind Across the lines He's got a life, just like mine So they put a cross On my head To tend to the wounded  And carry the dead I heard a voice, that said "Move" Was it God? Or was it you? I was the last Guardsman standing From my Normandy landing They sent me back Across the seas, to that smalltown Where you'd be, waiting for me  Won't you wait for me? They've moved you across the town now I visit, but somehow Your mind is somewhere new Look at what we made, love: Our grandson - our grandson Is singing for you The story of me and you How you helped me make it through The fire of their rifles By my heart was my bible In my hand was your hand Reaching out from England Across the clouds, across the shrouds Across the ever after, through this disaster Across the generations Look what we've made on our island nation Our grandson asks me how the story ends I pass the story  With all its dreams and glory I pass it across to you What will you do?
