You read the book from cover to cover You'd heard the words but not in that order Who knows what they mean? It's unknowable You can't understand it And why that way? Let's be enigmatic And stand for what you want us to Selling blank canvases with titles and provenance Let's be profound and say nothing You have a memory but it's kind of sketchy It comes in fragments you think may have happened But then who's to say? It's unreliable You cannot rely on it The found letter Beautiful words Enough to hold onto God, she was in love with you Who was she anyway? Nothing's as it seems at the time The memories are made and pulled out of the air By the same addled mind that is telling you stories She doesn't remember you either You dress yourself in sack cloth and ashes Saying, oh I'm so ineffectual But what if you got a reaction while your head was down? What does it really mean to take responsibility? Does it mean it's your turn to jump off the bridge? Do you have to reexamine everything that you did?
