Alchemy

I stopped by your party just to make a show of letting go And give a little comfort to the enemy And that old radio was playing that new song That everybody loves, except for me So I slipped out to the balcony To practice a little alchemy And try to turn my heart back into gold Guess I thought eventually Someone would come outside with me But I'm just blowing smoke and getting cold It's getting cold I saw a child's drawing in chalk Half-erased on the sidewalk And wondered what it was supposed to be But I wouldn't want to look the artist in the eye Or he might start to see the things that I can see I want a formula for saving souls I'll keep on mixing up chemicals And one of these days I'll get it right But in the meantime I don't need the light of heaven shining in my eyes I just need a little halo for the night Just a little halo So until those stars look right to me I'll keep practicing my alchemy And try to turn this heart back into gold, into gold I still hope eventually Someone will come outside with me But I'm just blowing smoke and getting cold It's getting cold It's getting cold Oh Lord, it's getting cold
