He came to Iowa by way of Missouri Wanting to work the land I don't trust nobody in a hurry But I needed a hand So I put him to work and he was doing fine Carrying his load and taking some of mine Everything was going good 'til I could see Some birds circling the back forty But nobody would have known If it hadn't been for the crows The man I found was one I knew well Been working for me for years It was but an hour before darkness fell Guess it hit early here When they came to take him I gave them the name Of the only person who had been with him the whole day Now I guess the boy who was just passing through Won't be leaving Iowa any time soon But nobody would have known If it hadn't been for the crows Now there is something I forgot to mention About the man in the ground It had recently been brought to my attention He was in trouble in town An old buddy of mine had lent him some cash He was having trouble paying all of it back He had gotten himself in way too deep And I was tired of it always falling on me But nobody would have known If it hadn't been for the crows There are things you will do to a stranger For the sake of a friend It's easier to put someone else in danger Than to sit and defend This had been on the table for a while Kept having to put plans back into a file But every little detail fell into place When that Missouri boy started walking my way But nobody would have known If it hadn't been for the crows No no nobody would have known If it hadn't been for the crows
