In Spite of Me

I am the worst of sinners I am the worst of them all I dig my heels in the sand Only see my own plan And pride leads me to build up my walls I am the worst of sinners I see the things the way that I want Living in offense and greed Childish in word and deed Hoping that I won't get caught I can't see the good in me Or why the Lord puts up with me When all that I do seems to fail If I were God, I'd have grafted me out But thanks be to Him, I am not Christ speaks a different story over me Forgiven, healed, ransomed, loved, and redeemed The sting of my sin has been buried with Him Never to rise up again Christ speaks a different story over me I was held captive But He set me free Immature though I am God is the I Am Whose love goes endlessly Even in spite of me I am the worst of sinners Unworthy to lead any crowd Sin crouches at my door A wave crawling up the shore I give it a place in my house Without the Lord where would I be Trapped in all my jealousy In cycles of shame and regret Led by selfish motives Stepping over my own brother Loving only for what I can get Christ speaks a different story over me Forgiven, healed, ransomed, loved, and redeemed The sting of my sin has been buried with Him Never to rise up again Christ speaks a different story over me I was held captive But He set me free Immature though I am God is the I Am Whose love goes endlessly Even in spite of me My measureless debt's been forgotten By my Great Love who's begotten A change in my heart Deep love in my soul Sight beyond what my storehouses hold Now my whole world's been demolished And I can see what I've forgotten Billions of hearts who need grace from the Lord Whose arms have room for us all Christ speaks a different story over them They are sinners, yet they're forgiven Who am I to not extend The grace that saved me from my sins And called me from the grave I was in Oh, Christ speaks a different story over us Perfectly united, by His perfect blood We can stand hand-in-hand By the grace that pardons sin For thanks be to God Oh thanks be to God Thanks be to God He redeems even in spite of us
