Exit 33

Put the car in park in the early morning dark Walk across the empty lot alone The air is cool and crisp, lights are blinking through the mist In the distance you can hear the highway groan Say morning to Marie as she’s packing up to leave Settle up the register and wait Cozy in my post with my coffee and my toast Now the first car pulls up slowly to the gate It’s work but it works for me Here at exit 33 From minivans to motorbikes, semis to sedans Chevy, Honda, BMW I’ve just about seen it all through these sliding window walls Every walk of life comes riding through Mothers, husbands, children, gamblers, travelers, businessmen A couple running late to catch a plane Young and pretty girls on the run to see the world Far beyond this town they know will never change It’s work but it works for me Here at exit 33 That’s not to say I never dreamed of breaking free Just another passerby with somewhere to be But honestly I like it here and it likes me It’s a cotton candy sky as I put the car in drive Seven hours straight I’ve had to stand Printing tickets, counting change, but you won’t hear me complain ‘Cause the devil used to love my idle hands It’s work but it works for me
