The Good Kids

We were the good kids Spent our summers at the lake Stole the champagne from the wedding Snuck the whiskey out the wake And we found salvation by playing Spin the bottle after school Smashed the mailboxes to pieces And we dove into the pool The sun was always hot and the asphalt cracked And we hid in the orange grove, covered up our tracks And if I had the money I would give it back To be a good kid All we wanted was our freedom So we made the city proud At night we'd drive off to the old field And play the radio too loud Singing songs about escaping We'd smoke until we saw the sun Yeah we'd laugh until we passed out But it was bigger than having fun The nights were just as hot and the ocean black I left town on the highway, said I won't look back But when they sent my diploma I put it in a plaque Cause I was a good kid Now the color wars are corporate But all the bills have been paid We bitch and moan Monday through Friday Till we get drunk or we get laid But we've been having conversations And meditating in our hearts We know the fire is everlasting But it's so hard to start Soon we'll have our children They can have it better than we did Because we've been fighting off our demons So they'll raise the better kids The sun was always hot and the asphalt cracked And we hid in the orange grove, covered up our tracks And if I had the money I would give it back To be a good kid
