Today he came back from the hunt To his thriving village home His children playing all around His fires warm, his spirit calm Tomorrow all the herds are gone Slaughtered by the whites who came His village burned, his wife is gone His children taken far away A wave of hate washed over him Changed everything he knew No-one can remember how or why We walk on thin ice, everyday Civility is fleeting A mirage really that hides the dark heart that is inside of us beating We must be on our guard To beat it down and keep it caged Or we will all fall through the ice someday And no one will remember how or why Today he went to work and read the paper on the train His wife at home, his kids at school Later his friends will gather to laugh and dine Tomorrow he will have no trade The brown shirts came and took away His job, his house, his dignity They'll put a star upon his chest Soon he'll be dead like all the rest No one will remember how or why We walk on thin ice every day Civility is fleeting A mirage really that hides the dark heart that is inside of us beating We must be on our guard To beat it down and keep it caged Or we will all fall through the ice someday And no one will remember how or why Today he is at the factory with his friends Working hard all day To bring home his pay and buy the things His family needs and wants His house is warm, his pantry filled Whatever could go wrong?
