This Christmas (Peace on Earth)

Christmas was once a magical time Full of tinsel, bright lights, and snow We'd sing happy carols of Santa and sleighs Songs of holly and mistletoe Christmas Eve night, I'd close my eyes tight Making wishes for toys by the tree Then I'd wake the next morning, run down the stairs To find brightly wrapped gifts just for me Now I am older, my children are grown And the magic of Christmas is fading The world has grown weary, and the six o'clock news Leaves me bitter, down-hearted, and jaded Can we have peace on earth Just for this one Christmas day Let children have time to be children Without fear as they run and play All the hate and mistrust has led us nowhere There must be a better way Oh, I may be naive, but I need to believe In peace on earth this Christmas day Carolers sing the tired old songs Now that Christmas time's here once again But the carolers' voices are muffled by war And I find no good will toward man For too many years, and through too many tears We've seen suffering and pain without end And despite the well-wishes, it all doesn't stop Just cause Christmas has come round again So this year at Christmas, I'm making a new wish I know what I ask is quite tall I don't want a thing, but the thing that I wish Is not for me, but for us all Can we have peace on earth Just for this one Christmas night Let people the whole world over Step out into the light If we treated our neighbors as brothers and sisters We'd find there's no reason to fight Oh, I know this goodwill, maybe fleeting, but still We need peace on earth this Christmas night When it's all said and done I'm not the only one Who needs peace on earth this Christmas night
