I woke up wondering how I had survived All those crazy years I woke up wishing I could make it back in time All our secret wanderings, we were in our prime We lived in a time all our own June was freedom, August was the chains Of classes soon to come The rich girls' parties, swimming in the rain Kissing in the kitchen while their mothers filled the trays Summer was a world that we made I'd like to go back if only a day or so See that bygone friend and breathe that summer wind again Running through the streets at night With all the grown up door shut tight Tar stuck to our feet that still was hot from the blazing sun When the four of us were slipping into someone's dark garage For a cold mouthful of beer and the thrill of risking being caught And we spent our whole lives laughing or else trying to hold it back And the skies were always brighter and the eyes were mostly dry You know, I still have got the flower from the fourth day of July It has faded just a little, though I didn't notice when Like a dollar that you've wasted out and wanted back again Remember all our secret wanderings, we were in our prime And once upon a time We lived in a time all our own
