Nocturnal

The day brings flowers and love letters. The night brings deep kisses. The moon rides a smoky pony Across the midnight hour, Sinking away like consciousness, Falling westward. I dream of all the souls gone ahead, Over the old foot bridge Under the river and into the stars, Crossing from here to there. I stand above the current And say goodbye I will join you in time But not today, even with No kisses, no endearments Even with colorless rain Drowning the night, squeezing out My sorrow and regret into a bitter glass.
