Heaven Held Its Breath

Above the world in sacred hush The stars forgot to shine The angels watched in voiceless awe The edge of space and time The throne stood still, the scrolls unrolled No answer broke the sky For all of heaven waited As the lamb prepared to die Heaven held its breath As mercy met the grave No lightning flashed, no thunder spoke No mighty hand to save The hosts in gold fell to their knees They knew what love would cost Heaven held its breath As earth gained what heaven lost The silence rang like judgment's bell But grace was written deep They saw the nails, the blood, the thorns Yet angels dared not weep The lion bowed in agony The word went still and torn And in that hush, the cosmos watched Salvation being born One cry One breath The veil was torn The ground stood still As death was worn By holiness In human form Heaven held its breath But glory burned beneath For even as the silence reigned The seed was sown beneath And on that cross, though angels wept They knew what God had planned Heaven held its breath To watch him save man Heaven held its breath So we could breathe again
