Snow Angels

They're shoveling snow outside my apartment and it sounds like a dog breathing down my neck I half awake at dawn to the alarm I haven't even opened both eyes yet Last night I drained a bottle woke up fully clothed lying across my bed But I gotta go to work so I will get up take a shower clear my head (Somebody has to pay the rent) As snowdrifts form around me I remember Hampshire county All the iced up roads of Hadley nights I thought I would forget When I was younger my weeks were more unencumbered Now I think back to that winter when we met Those days when it got dark by five I couldn't breathe you couldn't drive I would meet you at the bus stop By the Walmart in my Honda And good god by the summer we were having fun Stay up till four wake up at one And nurse our twin hangovers Pouring whiskey in our coca colas Now I can't think straight When I get twisted Never half as much fun drinking As it was back then And by the time you hear this Well have gone another season Without speaking Time slips on I'll never be that young again And if I'm home for the weekend Maybe we can try a redo Maybe we can get wasted But we'll never feel brand new And if you come out for the weekend Maybe we can have a breakthrough Maybe we can make changes But we'll never feel brand new
