Power is at play when CEOs are up against others The CEO is the one who wants something done And the others are those the CEO depends on influencing to make that happen There are two types of power The power of CEOs over others And the power of others over CEOs Power sits on both sides of the exchange I get a call from Will and it's Tuesday Talkin bout a hiring event on Thursday This point I've applied for over two-hundred jobs And got denied for every single one of them jobs I'm tryna change reality but I feel trapped I'm gettin really tired of fillin out a job app They showin me no love with the job that I'm at Told Will I'm done with fillin out another job app I woke up in a sweat all I think what if I'm a dope artist cuz I followed what if This could be the change I need what if Think about it over a spliff Not done fillin out the app but I gotta go to work Call in to tell em I'm gon' be late to work All day my thoughts prayin that it work Cuz I'm gettin real tired of callin this place work The power of CEOs is always a matter of getting others to get things done Always having others intervene that's what gives them power The misunderstanding is not to fully grasp the power intervening the agency of others The CEO has the right to make decisions others are supposed to act on The power of office is a certificate to be the decision maker But no more than a driving license says how good a driver is Leave work early and I'm in the interview In the interview showin em my innerview Now the interview no longer an interview Got a smile on my face with a new innerview Accepted the job even though it was part-time I know if I grind I'll become full-time Now how do I quit my job thoughts on my mind Pops said once you in the system then it's time Took pops advice and waited out those five days Lemme tell you those were the longest five days Next thing I know the day come it's Tuesday I'm in their system now I'm quittin today A CEO is dependent both on the employees doing what was put to them And the customers complying All of these employees have the power to go along with their CEO or subvert Disregard what they say work to rule Drag their feet, turn their backs or refuse Those the CEO really depend on have as much power over the CEO as the CEO has over them I'm drivin home and I just couldn't stop smilin I got so happy I started yellin and freestylin Now I'm home plannin and plottin and in the shower About to show these people who really got the power Put on Bocaccio pants and the vest Bout to show these people how I like to play chess Now I see my boss talkin to her boss I just interupt her as she talk to her boss Now we in her office and I breathe from my chest Put the parkin pass and work ID on her desk I said I quit she said when's ya last day I said I didn't clock in so yesterday What makes people accept persuasion is authority A CEO with authority can persuade others to go along with the CEO's wishes Or even make others think and believe That what the CEO wants of them is what they also want The authority of the CEO is in the eyes of the beholder When underlings see that spark of authority They react similar to children who see Santa Claus Authority although appearing to the CEO is really in the gift of those the CEO wants to govern The ultimate power of others is their ability to deny the CEO the authority needed to affect them Over estimate what power can give you And under estimate the degree to which governance is a people business
