Bitterness fills the atmosphere; it emanates from hearts grown cold Weighed down by resentment that's decades old We show no mercy here; it's what we've been told Bound by shackles and burdens too heavy for our shoulders Our past transgressions ever before us Haunted by memories, wishing they'd either leave or ignore us Is forgiveness out of our reach? Can there ever be peace within the souls that dwell our cities' streets I watch the news for five minutes and I hate this world We're suffocating in this graceless world. But who's at fault Do we recognize our enemy in this fight It's hard to tell; he masquerades as an angel of light Shakin' our heads 'cause gangs kill over red and blue But the entire country's divided between red and blue The greatest instigator- mainstream media We gotta stop believin' these lies they're feedin' us Life without grace is eye for an eye, lie for a lie Gaining the upper hand is how we survive Fear and shame seep deep into our own bones We know little of forgiveness. Do we really have a voice? Make amends with his victims of trauma "Your honor, in my defense, I'm worth being acquitted I'm not defined by this one crime I committed And don't ignore my contribution to the poor The many lives I saved; hope this settles the score" But the truth is it wouldn't be justice if he's released From this heinous crime based on past positive deeds Then that standard is also for us, one sin is enough To be held accountable before a holy and righteous Judge But no, we're in charge; the center of the universe In other words, we are gods; responsible for this curse Life without grace is eye for an eye, lie for a lie Gaining the upper hand is how we survive.
