Tiny towns

You grab your jacket and your keys And you put your new shoes on You'll see the metaphysical apparitions That appear before the dawn You'll have it all One less way to fall But through the muddy slush And slop and slime You'd think that you Could still find the time to stall It's the weirdest little thing When you put it into words When you're passing through a tiny town That no one's ever heard of 'Til it's gone Driving towards the dawn Memories flash through windshields Like leaves out on the lawn A busy brick-built square And a courthouse for the town Where you could live a life Get married, settle down It could've been you A quiet life for two But all those vintage cars And mason jars No amount will ever change That lonely blue Passing picket fences And 100,000 farms Where a million bovine friends Fall asleep inside the barns Their days are sweet Just like you and me They graze out in the pasture Until we turn them into meat But the people all out there Are so tangible and kind A loving wife and a happy home To give them peace of mind That's who they are Numbered like the stars They work days and sleep nights Pillow fights and camping in the yard Sunny days make a simple life She knitted you a scarf made out of yarn Sleep for a little longer Hit snooze on your alarm Homemade meals and reading lights The people you love Right there in your arms
