Tunnels

Just the other morning Through filmy waves of sleep I heard grace softly weeping Just beyond my reach Buried in the pain beneath The more I stop and listen The more I feel their fear Despite their dire condition They hide their lonely tears Biting into life with clenched teeth I wait, I wonder While angels withstand the grueling weight Tell me why sorrow stalks the warm? Their cries echo on the tunnel walls A dark descent, hands extending through the keep Unfathomed depths hinder tending grace unseen No avail, death impending light condemned Life will end discontent, helpless to help them When I wake tomorrow, will I still hear their cries? Will they still bare the burden, while I watch with glazed eyes? Where is the remedy? Why such extremes? It should be me in their place Facing the gauntlet Deafening screams No way to warm them The angels lie dying dark and cold Tracing the tired lines Where they gave it all Facing life alone I wait, I wonder While angels withstand the grueling weight Tell me why sorrow stalks the warm?
