The Root Cellar

A cellar deep in the woods I have answered the call once again The frozen and twisted limbs of the trees Point like cold fingers of snow Long before this cold winter night fell Souls used to roam these woods Leaving evidence of their journeys Now darkness has come and obscured I scavenge for something to aid my survival Yet the shelves are barren and darkened I fall down against the cold stones that line the walls Still not forgetting my destiny My torch has lit the way my whole journey The flame burned through the coldest snow But now as I stit, so cold, so alone My torch starts to flicker, losing its glow My eyes are heavy, I wonder if sleep shall come again I long to be held by the arms of warmth Though this far, far into my search What's real and what's not is but a blur There is nowhere beyond the night's embrace There is nowhere beyond the nights, embrace (no) Flicker, flicker, oh eternal flame Fade away into the night Leave me, leave me here without a guide And let Autumn come to me Whisper, whisper, sing me songs of death I'm calling out to you Autumn, Autumn, let me see you first The last thing I must do before I die Suddenly, I awake from my trance And faintly hear eerie whispers outside I recognize the voice, I've heard it on my journey Autumn is leading me out of this place Limping, struggling to walk I make my way up the thousand steps And my hand grasps, I latch it to the door I fall back onto the snow again I have no more light, though a faint glow is in front of me Which emits from this pale figure I turn my head so slowly upwards And I'm face to face with my destiny
