Have I Done Any Good

In a hospital bed with stiff linen sheets With a tired old voice he's starting to sing "Have I done any good in the world?" That was years ago, I think about it Idaho winters are bringing him down There's nothing to see in a snow covered town Headed south to the sun and the sea Small family, with big American dreams He picks up a saxophone, opens a valve His two little daughters make up the crowd And they sing as the band charges on Hugging their knees, til everyone's gone There were the sun drenched days Your teenage boys, a boat, and plenty of food There was the desperate thief You gave a meal, a bed, and something to do If I could only live my life as full as you And this blood in my veins, and this song in my hands As I try to relate to this mythical man And I understand now more than I understood then I like to think that we would've been friends I was only a kid, over a decade ago I saw my dad well up, we let our grandfather go And I've felt it before, I know I'll feel it again You're walking by my side You'll see me through to the end I climb into bed and pull up the sheets I'm closing my eyes and starting to think Have I done any good in the world?
