I lay on the grass in the summer The warmth of the sun on my face Not worrying if it would pass Or for what would be taking its place What once seemed so far away, was very soon realised I looked and the light was greying into stormy skies Look at the night and see when it falls Laying darkness over all By night time I look at the night and say when it falls I'll retreat inside these walls And you'll comfort me tonight another time I look at the light as the shadows fall In the stillness, darkness calls I swear I'll decide this time When you're spacing out, only Jaded, full of doubts, lonely With every hour turning sour in your mind On the point of a razor at fraying time The only laughs in the photographs Reminding you of once much better times Caught between the lines of pressure With no let up at all Look at the sky when the rain will fall Windswept at the seawall And I'm standing here alive another night The patterns of lightness and dark are all I owe you more than I ever could say Will you walk with me down by the river one more time Look at the night without fear at all Remembering how it was Before it caught us The muddy waters, the muddy waters Torrid times When the banks have burst, flooded The damage at its worst, face bloodied With very muscle, every sinew in you, try With every breath to the death, dare to defy I swam alone, but the waters rose too high For me left stranded by the tide Tonight, survive the storm So much of my effort wasted No matter how hard I tried So much for the plans I made For the trust I placed in my strength applied So much of this bitter taste So much of my stupid pride Staring through fingers splayed, in disarray Going out of my mind Though I know a thaw must come after the freeze It's so slow to turn these bitterest degrees And when it's gnawing in your bones and you can barely see Then, with a heart as cold as stone, you've got to will to be So much of my time I've waited So much I've just sat in line Wearing an obedient look And the pains I took on my obsequious smile So much of what I wrote I hated So much was like drinking brine Throwing, until it finally took Just like a grappling hook And I began to climb The wind blows, in lonely tones, across the seas But I know, the promise on the warmer breeze Until, with flowing water, Earth renews fertility There are fish, my lines are taut, all swimming downstream to the sea Into a life beyond And I've faced my longest night alone
