Everybody’s got their line Tell me yours, I’ll tell you mine He gave me something new to get me through the night A bleary-eyed deep sleep He and I could have spoke for years Neither I nor he could see for tears And in that gaudy basement flat let free our greatest fears And the secrets I told to his ear And the way he clung to me so dear What a hateful way to make you feel And I’d do it once again Cold and harsh like winter air How could I forget that glare From yours to mine, a steely gaze Fortunes I couldn’t tell But I wore his hand around my neck And he lit another cigarette It’s the smoking part that I regret But I’d do it once again I told him ‘bout an ex-housemate whose father passed away And I told him ‘bout your mother’s friend whose husband wouldn’t stay And he told me how his cousin dearest fought and lost their leg It’s all misread palms, little love lines, bitter pills What business have I in the bed you left without a trace So I woke up to a different face He said you and I have got it made And he said he’s made a grave mistake But I’d do it once again
