Pushing Rope

Well I met her at the hoedown she was pretty as could be We danced under the moonlight pullin' her close to me My heart was gallopin' wild like a mustang breaking from the ranks But by the end of the night I was a-shootin' blanks I'm pushing rope a lasso without a loop Tried to ride the rodeo but I've hollered my last whoop She was ready for the roundup but I was just all talk All hat no cattle I couldn't walk the walk I was as limp as the prairie grass in a hail storm She had eyes that sparkled like stars in the western sky And every dance with her my hopes began to rise But when we got alone my spurs they wouldn't spin Found myself a cowboy that couldn't rope her in I'm pushing rope no cowboy's tale to boast At the hoedown showdown I was less when she needed most Thought I was the sheriff but I lost my badge tonight Left holding just my hat all soft when it came to the fight Soft as a saddle in the rain Oh I've wrangled bulls and I've tamed wild steeds But this one time I couldn't meet her needs Guess every cowboy sometimes finds The size of the bull is just in his own mind Next time I see her gonna prove I'm not just smoke No more whiskey no more shots next time I won't choke Gonna show her I'm the stallion I claimed to be before Next hoedown she'll see there's a hero not an empty drawer Till then I'm pushing rope it's a cowboy's cry A night started wild left hanging low and dry Next time we're dancing I'll finish more than her hopes No more flopping I'll be slinging the full rope So here's to the lessons that come hard and steep Next hoedown I'll be the cowboy she'll wanna keep No more pushing rope gonna get loose from my pen With my lady by my side I'll ride again!
