Moonlight

Blank stare of the watch face Pierces through your thoughts And every night is haunting When you mourn the time that's lost Moments uneventful Blend in with the rest And years slip through like quicksand Each day that passes leaving less I can only reach the stars when lofting through a dream And when I finally reach them, I lose the plot of what they mean Every star's a phantom A blinking artifice of flight Everyone's a runner Fleeing from their lacking lives A drifting ship, a sunken soul The moon and waves both push and pull Moments that bring tears to eyes Are dog-eared chapters of our lives Every time I try To squint my eyes and see the light My shadow weighs behind And anchors me with leadened lies From dawn to dusk I walk alone But every step I take's my own Treading the unwandered path Forging my own epitaph Even in the darkest light I'll stumble on Despite the wrong And find my way by moonlight
