Love and Weakness

You're kicking sand under my eyelids You're adding chaos to the current Hide your face in the waves Don't let me get in your way I came here to forget the things that happen when I look away But you my reflection in the water won't look at me You stare up at the sky instead where you wish you could be Were you not trapped in the sea Trapped beneath my feet Like yours were tied to mine I step aside and we intertwine again I block your way to the sky You block my way to the water That's calling me to sink to the depths and dissolve So if this sand will be my grave Then walk through my body and wash away Will I get lost with nothing but fingernails to carve a map in the waves? To carve away at the water carving holes in me? Will we get lost? We fall apart like castles in the sand under the waves' embrace We fall apart like cities in the storm you're breathing out Will we be breathing at all? Will your fingernails make marks in the clouds? If I walk into the waves will you reach the sky or will your image just dissolve? Why do we try too hard to fall apart? You didn't always long for the sky I didn't always long for the sea Why are we falling away from what we used to be? We were always just enough We were two hands clasped in prayer So useless but so sure that if we stayed we would be all right A closed door Closed off but we felt safe inside We were closing eyelids so worn out by the light But now you burn in the sun But now the waves take my sight
