I once had a life Of comfort and love With my husband and son I was so proud of Seems like that life Has been torn away So I sit by the Shallow River each day The last thing he told me As he pushed from shore Into the river With our sweet boy We'll be home soon With fish for tonight Then they paddled away And were soon out of sight Shallow River Shallow River Shallow River Shallow River keeps us apart The weather man said Haul your boats in from shore You shouldn't be out On the river no more Storm it is coming And it will be strong Batten the hatches Stay put until dawn I stood in the wind As it howled 'round my face I called and I called Knowing it was too late There wasn't a chance They would hear me from shore But I kept right on calling 'Til I could no more Shallow River Shallow River Shallow River Shallow River keeps us apart Rain was like hammers Wind tore off the roof Trees broke like matchsticks And the river was proof Of the power of nature As the water poured through And our home by the river Was carried off too Ooooo Ooooo Ooooo Ooooo Been livin' at the shelter Since they been gone I know pretty soon I'll have to move on Until that time I sit by this shore Keeping watch on the Shallow River once more I look to the horizon What do I see Two figures are walking And waving at me One is so little One is so tall And I know in that moment I've been saved from it all Shallow River Shallow River Shallow River Shallow River returns my heart
