Bluejeans worn clean through to my knees and my collar is limp and frayed The soles of my shoes are somewhere behind I think I lost them along the way My story's full of pages torn with creased and wrinkled lines The bottoms of my pockets have holes worn through like the holes in my tired mind In my tired mind Well a man told me in confidence that Heaven knows I'm here He read it from a book from another time he mumbled and it didn't seem clear He talked of a God and His only Son and of me who they yet hadn't found He cued up the band and said get to your knees I guess he didn't see me on the ground I was on the ground And I'm still tryin' after all this time Still tryin' to carry the miles And I'm still tryin' after all this time Still tryin' to marry the smiles After all this time after all these miles I've been low enough to crawl under a snake And high as an eagle flies I'll never give up I'll never say never I love an open road staring me in the eye Well I once had a choice of roads but I couldn't decide a way So I tossed up a coin but it never came down and it still ain't been found today So I'm rolling back down to the open seas with a dirty wind torn sail To find that coin that I chose heads to see if it tells a tail If it tells a tale
