Reflection

My reflection won't leave me alone I saw his face ripple slowly in a cup of tea We locked eyes in an empty screen The window washer left me staring at him in the street I think I'll leave the city and hope he don't follow me I went out to the countryside and bathed in blues and greens The clothes upon my back were I brought with me I saw down on a hill and I began to breathe Then my shadow rose above me and he sat down at my feet My reflection won't let me be A cloud welled up and a tulip sighed A bird sat down and watched the time fly by A nameless wave rose and fell and slunk back into the sea He'll try and rise again before the tide falls asleep I see myself in all these things I know he's out here too The sky copies my face and frowns with the moon The blood flows through my body like a stream flows through trees My head tosses my thoughts like the wind tosses the leaves My reflection won't let me be I retire to a book from well before I was bare I figured theres no way I could find him there It's the story of a young man stranded out at sea Oh, the sea is all my days and the young man is me At a fruit stand or a fruit tree in a taxi or asleep The face of who I am is mocked by who I want to be The world is but a mirror I turn away and close my eyes But in that darkness, somehow clearer, is the man that I disguise
