Maria was a girl who worked on the farm In sunny Italy where days were long and hard And poor though she was since her father died She was rich in love and filled with God's light Courage without bound sweetness without stain Maria held her ground She loved through the pain Maria sweet and pure put her trust in God 'Cause evil's never far from those whom God loves The man approached one day and threatened with a knife With evil in his heart and sickness in his mind Her sister heard the sound the angels hid their faces But Maria held her ground She loved through the pain The ambulance it sped and doctors tried to save That girl's feeble life her condition grave Blood came from her wounds and teardrops from her eyes Yet her vision clear on Him who was her prize When upon the Cross those words He said They became her own uttered from her bed "God forgive the man who takes my life this day May he join me there in heaven's embrace" Courage without bound sweetness without stain Maria held her ground She loved through the pain She loved through the pain Maria held her ground She loved through the pain
