Feel Things

She said I was an empath Didn't know what that meant But sometimes I be living Too much in my head I could feel what you feel Without any words I know when you're happy And when it hurts Growing up I didn't really Know why I was different Or the way that I would feel things when Everybody else just listened I would run through my mind Like memories inherited And their stories became mine like A tragedy unmerited And the more that I thought Just meant the more that I'd feel when Even the fake stories to me They felt so real and I would try to ignore them But it was no use Every image imprinted on me like Mental abuse And honestly, I'd modestly Try to cover up the pain 'Cause the more that I'd think about it The more that I felt so strange how come Nobody else felt this way When I lived it every day But it wasn't 'til I opened up Would I ever be okay She said I was an empath Didn't know what that meant But sometimes I be living Too much in my head I could feel what you feel Without any words I know when you're happy And when it hurts I was quiet and I was pensive So as one of my defenses I'd be Overly insensitive Cracking jokes at their expense And I'd be the biggest class clown 'Cause I fed off their attention And I would puff my chest out Faking smiles as prevention 'Cause if I could Make it about them Then it wasn't about me And I could suppress the loudest voice Of insecurity and I would Avoid the sting That every word would bring 'Cause the introspective sensitive He was in full-swing She said I was an empath Didn't know what that meant But sometimes I be living Too much in my head I could feel what you feel Without any words I know when you're happy And when it hurts Until my late twenties I thought that it was wrong The way all of my feelings to me They came on so strong But it was actually a strength In a creative way So now I embrace the sensitivity And it's here to stay
