Lover of Hard Edges (Live)

I have become a lover of hard edges Like the serrated sides of spiraled shells or The tip-off point of rough-cut sea cliffs I have become a lover of hard edges Because I am made of the same stuff I am made of sharp corners that are bumped into And I am made of uneven surfaces that scrape knees Sometimes it's hard to be a lover of hard edges Because others prefer what's smooth A stone that's already tumbled through a river until it's polished They don't want to see an eroded piece of rock A featureless pebble is far easier to hold Healing is quite like tumbling It takes time, energy, effort If you are only a lover of smoothed edges You are not worthy to hold those rounded pebbles Who've worked so hard through this whole process And some roughness is important Though many do not understand They try to sand away any of my uneven sides But I do not let them because Those ridges are my fingerprints They are what mark me as me So I am a lover of hard edges Because they are diamonds still encased in coal And those rocks before the river need love too
