Familiar Strangers

I met a man, with a plan On the subway in the evening He said he rode, everyday Just to leave a lonely home And he told he that he'd stayed alive Just getting by on conversations with strangers He said I look around, ignore the noise And listen close for aching souls alone Everyday, we met at eight And crossed the shadow lines of fear and hate We erased the shadow lines, and shallow truths Of millennial pain But then once my life turned around I moved away and in with an old flame No parting words, new part of town 'Cause that is how the world rolls today All of our lives, we pass one another Watching our time, as it crumbles into dust Voices sing out, but echoes still follow There's so much silence, so much left unsaid So a few months went by And I found myself lonely (Lonely again) Then on one autumn day Found my feet guide me to him (Back to that subway) As I went down at 8 Looking for a shape familiar (In a familiar state) I did not find a trace Neither breath nor a face Just an empty seat leaving We were just familiar strangers
