Lady of the harbour Lets the rain pour on her silver strings Lady ocean dancer Carves her songs in wooden things He speaks all in vagueness With words that sound pretty to whisper He asks her for directions She offers a riddle to answer Words are like twine tying amateur knots Binding the hands with impossible thoughts Two poets who write in the language of love Will call to each other in two foreign tongues Lady of the harbour Will live to drown another man Lady ocean dancer Scratches mercy in the sand The sentimental sailor Reads surrender on her shore But then the storm takes over And when it rains it really pours You told me once we are ships in the night Coming so close and I pass you right by But I saw my face in the blue of your eyes And nothing can twist the great arms of the tide He's strung out on sea salt she's high and so dry He's looking for west so he sails for the sky The sand slips away with each of their sighs And the birds cry morning
