The Mechanic

Working bathed in pale light and oil stains Sheltered from silence he lowers the hood Jen and Dan are home sleeping soundly Time now to see if his wiring is good Turns ignition; wishing does nothing "Damn it" He grins as he opens the door Wonders if it's time to go home now Picks up the keychain he dropped on the floor Lifts up the hood and his eyes shift about But it could take him hours to sort it all out Seems there's no choice but to call it a night So he picks up his smokes and he turns off the light Starts to walk with cigarette glowing Lighting his way as he lumbers toward home Pauses frozen tickled by breezes Staring at nothing and standing alone Wheels start to turn and he knows what he missed When he shut out the world in his gear-headed bliss Smiling and tossing his dead cigarette He repeats to himself so he doesn't forget Turns and quickly kills off his progress Knowing that Danny won't miss him 'til dawn Walks back in and needlessly softly closes the door and the lights are back on
