DADDIES HOME

Stepped off the plane, feelin' heavy as steel, Eyes on the ground, heart tryin' to heal, Wife's in my arms, she's cryin' with joy, But I'm lost in the shadows, not the same boy. Three little girls runnin' up to my side, "Daddy, you're home!" they say with pride, But inside I'm broken, fightin' to stand, Left the war behind, but it's still in my hands. I'm home with my family, but I'm fightin' inside, Three little daughters, and a wife by my side, They see me smilin', but they don't see the pain, I'm back from the war, but it's still in my brain. Dinner at the table, tryin' to stay in the now, But the past keeps callin', don't know how, Wife holds my hand, squeezes it tight, But I'm pullin' away, lost in the night. Daughters showin' pictures, "Daddy, look at this," They draw me as a hero, but something's amiss, I smile at them softly, but I'm feelin' the strain, They don't know the weight of the world in my brain. I try to be present, but the past won't let go, The echoes of battle, they haunt me, I know, Wife whispers, "You're safe, you're home now," But the war's in my veins, can't figure out how. How do I love when I'm scared to feel? How do I sleep when the wounds won't heal? I'm fightin' a war that they can't understand, Will I ever find peace, will I ever be that man?
