The ravens perched on powerlines Tangled in the trees Watching with their sentry eyes Until we fell asleep Soldiers from our poisoned minds Waiting for the perfect time To cut our throats with memories And fill their hungry beaks Waiting for our teeth to grind To ribbon us with leaves Lying to ourselves we screamed "We are not our memories are we Just made of snow and teeth" I kissed you like a magnetcar Bracing for the crash Our love like crumpled newspaper Shoulder deep in ash I bled a wine of perfect lies That stung like stars between your eyes We never paid attention love You kissed the summer sun It was winterlight when we woke up And saw what we had done I forgot how to be And you became a whirl of leaves In my sunsoaked sheets Autumn starved the birds had pecked And clawed us all to shreds Excuses and apologies were all That we were left Our first kiss held for such a while We fell into unconscious fire How could we have been so blind To think we'd cheated blood To think we could escape ourselves Cause no one ever does Watching from behind our glass And clawing out at those that pass We were ravens all along
