Downtown

See that lady in the pretty dress, and the long hair, she's all smiles She'd never say it to my face but, she don't want me downtown The buses quit runnin', there ain't been a train, through these parts in years And the cabs won't even stop for me either, they don't want me downtown City hall said, that they wanna Keep the folks like me At least 200 feet away, even after I pay a fee They say they wanna keep main st. pretty Then they start paintin' the buildings grey They closed all the stores where I was treated with a smile No they don't want me downtown But I'll sneak in when I know no one's lookin' and Make a little noise Most folks enjoy themselves anyway, and I can be gone before anyone can say Hey, we don't want you downtown Someone might smile at me, as I pass on my way Someone might even say hello, but they don't ask me to stay There's folks just like me down there all the time, lots of folks I know But I guess there's something different about me 'cause They don't want me downtown They'll let me in, but they don't want me to stay No they don't want me downtown They don't want me to come down to the night No they don't want me downtown
